Annie Day, Director of Daisy Chain Consulting is passionate about environmental sustainability management with many years’ experience, coming from a background of 20 + years in the construction industry.

• 2023 Beacons Awards – Commercial Construction

Awesome to be awarded Supreme Runner Up award for my work at AUT Northcote, working on waste mgmt. The project ended up with over 88% waste by weight diverted from landfill. Lots of new processes were instigated to divert waste and the Resource Sorters Course was written.

•  Resource Sorter

I developed the Resource Sorter – Construction, NZQA equivalency level 2, 5 points course.
I now work with Sime Group to facilitate this course nationwide. Outlining a strategic business plan to roll out the course, marketing with key industry companies.

• Spill Kit – Commercial Construction

Reviewing the spills we had on our sites confirmed we needed a kit to help us with all types of spills. I worked with Active Safety and PH7 to pick the right equipment. It was well received, especially changing the wheely bin to a bag.

• Envirocon wet concrete reuse – Commercial Construction

Formed a partnership with Envirocon who will take the wet concrete and use it to form blocks. Worked on their waste certificate so we could use it for our waste reporting. REUSE of a material is better than recycling, cutting out the extra carbon emissions involved in transport / crushing / transport to the next location and health benefits of less silica dust in the air

• Reusable cable ties – Commercial Construction

The same product but different, reusable cable ties. I researched to see if there was a better product that could be used and found the reusable cable tie. This has been a 2-year journey from understanding the impacts of the waste generated from a 5gram singe use plastic tie to working through legal spec changes to changing mindsets to use and reuse the same cable tie to being able to purchase them off the shelf.

• Textile waste recycling – Commercial Construction

Creating a Circular Economy with our branded clothing. I worked with Textile Products with a goal to recreate a product (Retex) that we could buy back to use in our construction of buildings. The output and final product is turned into a thin protective sheet. We use this to protect the final finishes before handover.

• Plastic waste audit at Onehunga High School – Commercial Construction

My first collaborative trial was with Unitec where we collected plastic waste from our building sites. This exercise exposed the full extent of plastic products we use in construction and my new found enthusiasm to swap out as much plastic as I could.
